Thomas Haines
Thomas E. Haines was one of Altoona’s earliest
settlers. He came to the area in 1868 and lived here until
his death in 1908. Haines was a community leader and local

Neal Smith
Neal Edward Smith of rural Altoona was Iowa’s longest
serving representative in the United States Congress. He served
from 1959 to 1995 as representative from Iowa’s Fourth

George Kurtzweil came from a family rich in agricultural heritage.
